Dirty chimneys can cause chimney fires and chimney fires destroy lives and homes.
A chimney fire is caused by the combustion (burning) of creosote (soot) deposits inside the flue. These deposits build up over time until either the chimney blocks completely or the chimney reaches a temperature and oxygen level which will cause ignition. Due to the volatile nature of these materials, these types of fires tend to burn very hot. Birds nests lodged in chimneys can also cause fires.
The New Zealand Fire Service and your insurance company will recommend having your chimney or flue cleaned annually by a professional chimney sweeper. Your insurance company may not pay out in the event of a chimney fire caused by a fire that hasn’t been cleaned in the last 12 months.
To reduce the risk of a chimney fire, we recommend the following:
- Burn only dry seasoned wood.
- Build smaller, hotter fires that burn more completely and produce less smoke.
- Never burn cardboard boxes, wrapping paper, plastic or rubbish in your wood fire.
- Have an annual fire safety inspection and professional clean.
We carry replacement fire bricks and baffles for many makes and models and can undertake many small repair jobs. We are also fully insured for your peace of mind.
